Liptov

Reimagining and transforming an old LP cover for its contemporary reinterpretation. Liptov is a 12 track collaboration between contemporary Czech and Slovak electronic music producers, each tasked with reinterpreting 1982s “Liptov - A Panorama of Folk Song and Music Culture”. The original collection sought to preserve the musical cultural heritage of the region, while the “Liptov” compilation maps the current spectrum of the electronic scene of both countries, across genres and styles. Initiated by Prague-based community project Punctum, and released on the Punctum Tapes label, the artists of Liptov not only confront the past with the present via the reimagining of traditional music, but also contribute to the ongoing emancipation of the local electronic music scene. All tracks produced for this compilation are adaptations of the material originating from ‘Liptov – panoráma ľudovej a piesňovej kultúry’ (OPUS, 1982, Svetozár Stračina & Viliam Ján Gruska).
The cover design features two layers – green and red. To honour the music's origins from a specific old record, we retained the original cover, embedding it in a red layer that vanishes under a red transparent cover, allowing the green layer, our visual reaction, to emerge. This approach mirrors the process in music where artists modify, add to, and transform original content for contemporary appeal. In the club, alternating red and green lights filter the colour layers, allowing each to be viewed separately, thus creating a dynamic visual experience that complements the music.
