Crisis as
an opportunity
Slovak Design Award

During two years of crises, the creation of a unifying visual identity, web and editorial design for the Slovak Design Award was both an opportunity to reflect on the difficult times past us and a chance to look out for what is to come.
The Slovak Design Award (NCD) is an annual exhibition and ceremony where the fields of product design and communication design are exhibited, evaluated and awarded, alternating between the two categories every year. In 2021, a joint exhibition took place, which was also reflect in the unifying yet distinct design of the identity.
The exhibition took place in former military barracks, serving as the starting point of the creative process. In order to distinguish the two fields, two distinct colours were chosen which are atypical for the military theme. NCD fitted the barracks with flags, which served as an inspiration when designing the layout and composition that is masked and cut off on surfaces. The design is split into troops, each representative of an award category. The theme is continued in the design of the catalogue which is hidden in an MRE-style bag, complete with a (nutritional) content label. The catalogue is also split into two parts, forcing the reader to merge them together, just like military rations that come in separate packages and cans. As for the award object itself, it has the form of a military decoration a medal with a ribbon. Functionality, strictness and military precision were the keywords guiding the design, leading to a result which is to be perceived clearly, rationally and without emotion.
