A home away
from home
NhàBè
Personal stories and sentimental histories can be stimulating prompts for the creation of a design. That was certainly the case when working for NhàBè, a modern yet authentic Vietnamese bistro.
NhàBè’s story started when the owner, Nam Van Nguyen, was just a small child, travelling to Nhà Bè, a district of Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam. He brought the memories from his travels back home, and hoped that one day, he’ll be able to recreate the experiences from where the other part of his roots is. The NhàBè brand identity is built on this personal story.
The identity visualises the bistro’s connection to Ho Chi Minh City through the illustrated character of a hungry boy. The primary element of the identity is the table (family, food) from behind which the illustrated character peeks out, linking an impersonal place to a personal memory. It is a typical moment from the kitchen that the customers can identify with while at the same time, it is representative of the owner’s story. Both the logo and the typography are extensions of the table element, whereby the logo is a variation on the boy peeking from behind it and the typography is designed so that it can be placed on top of it. A number of illustrations that accompany the type and can be placed on top of the table according to the website's needs were also created.
